ROGER Whittaker sang a song that goes something like this:
“I don’t believe in if anymore; if’s an illusion; if is for children building daydreams . . . ”
That little word is still be so valid today that it can change history, our circumstances – and even determine our eternal destiny. We regretfully ponder some of the events of the past and wonder:
“If only . . . broken relationships could be restored through forgiveness and restitution, if only that root of bitterness could be eradicated.”
Some things of the past are beyond repair, but what about the present and the future? Let us consider the principle of sowing and reaping.
“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows” (Galatians 6:7). If we desire love, peace, joy, friendliness etc, that is what we need to be sowing! Society as a whole would be considerably different if only people would consider others and learn to say no to temptation.
I understand the unreality of the utopia I speak of, but the process can begin with you and me. It is imperative to seek the will of God for our individual lives, for: “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps” (Proverbs 16:9).
The consequences of our decisions could affect our lives either positively or negatively. Every promise in the Word of God is conditional.
Therefore, the promise only becomes effective if we fulfil the condition. Let me use 1 John 1:9 as an example. It says: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness”.
The Bible is a treasure chest just waiting to be opened. I still do believe in “if” – if’s not an illusion!
