SETTING a new record and walking away with the trophy for club champion was none other than Port Alfred High School pupil Wian van Aswegen, who outplayed the rest of the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club members during the club championship last weekend.

The championship was played over two days in perfect, warm weather with little to no wind. According to club manager Corrie van Zyl, the course is in great condition and everyone had good fun.

The championship had three sections – A, B and C – and players placed according to their handicap. Ultimately, Van Aswegen, who has played for the youth foundation since 2006, played one of his best rounds and rose to the top of the score sheet on both championship days. He was confirmed as being the club championship’s youngest ever winner.

Although not confirmed, Van Zyl speculated that the youngster had won the trophy by at least 15 shots – a new club record.

In the A-section, during Saturday ’s round, Earl Tsolekilo came in as runner-up. And on Sunday the runner-up was Tom Wagner. But despite this, on a points margin it was Leon Nell who ended up as the championship runner-up.

On Saturday nearest to the pin on the 6th was Wollie Wolmarans, on the 8th Don Broedelet, on the 11th Leon Nell and the 13th Neil Loundar. On the last day of the club championship it was Trevor Taylor on the 6th, Kevin Heny on the 8th, Lourens Wahl on the 11th and Paul Griffins on the 13th.

“Thank you to our sponsors Viv Jordan and Buco,” Van Zyl said.
