Only one way to avoid guilty verdict

“ALL rise. This court is now in session with the Judge of all the earth presiding.”

It is written: “‘As surely as I live’, says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.’ So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God” (Romans 14:11, 12).

Let us imagine that each one of us must take the stand in the heavenly courtroom as the accused. The devil, who is the “accuser of our brothers” (Revelation 12:10) begins by pointing out all our faults and failures. What he is saying rings true in our ears. There can only be one verdict… guilty!

We could strive to justify our sinful conduct by blaming it on our upbringing, or the weakness of our sinful nature. We just could not help ourselves! Maybe we would try to highlight the positively wonderful works we accomplished on earth. They do not seem to impress the Judge at all.

Before the Judge can raise His gavel to pronounce the eternal judgement we deserve, our Advocate rises in our defence. His defence is so powerful and profound that the devil stands trembling, for he knows that he has lost yet another soul.

His defence is as follows: “The ransom price has been paid in full. I gave my life to purchase this soul!” The 24 elders and the four living creatures begin to sing, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God…” (Revelation 5:9).

The Judge of all the earth pronounces the verdict: “There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ; step down to enjoy the blessing of eternal life.”
