DANIEL received prophecies pertaining to what is known as the last days.
Concerning these, the Lord said to him: “But you, Daniel, close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge” (Daniel 12:4). “Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased” according to the King James Version.
The last few decades has seen an increase of knowledge at an astounding rate. The Juno Spacecraft is presently orbiting Jupiter after travelling for almost five years and covering a distance of approximately 2.8 billion kilometres! Why? In order to gain further knowledge of planets in our solar system.
When we consider the advances mankind has made in almost every area of expertise, the words of the Lord in Genesis 11:6 comes to mind. It was spoken during the building of the Tower of Babel and it says, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.”
The Bible says that “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7). Although knowledge is on the increase, the fear of the Lord is on the decrease! We need to consider what is meant by the fear of the Lord.
One brief disclosure of the awesomeness of the God of the universe will strike within us a deep-seated reverence for Him. Reverence for God will affect our every thought, word and action. “Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his footstool; he is holy” (Psalm 99:5).
All the knowledge gained will profit us nothing if we do not know the fear of the Lord… it is the beginning of knowledge!
