A HORRIFIC accident involving three cars on the R67 at the Mansfield turnoff caused a massive holdup in both directions as police and emergency service personnel attempted to separate the mangled wreckage and take survivors to Port Alfred Hospital.
One person died in the crash.
The tailback in both directions stretched for over a kilometre and lasted for almost two hours before the traffic began to flow again.
At the scene the atmosphere was sombre as a small group of onlookers attempted to make sense of what had happened.
Police spokeswoman Captain Mali Govender explained in a police report what had occurred.
“A case of culpable homicide is being investigated following [the accident that occurred] at around 1.30pm on Sunday.
“There were three vehicles involved. The details of the accident are [as yet] unclear and witnesses are being interviewed. One person died at the scene and several others taken to hospital with serious injuries.”
