Tales of the Kowie of the past

REMINISCENCE OF THE KOWIE: Heather Howard, left, gave a personal and very interesting perspective on her life in Port Alfred at the Probus Club meeting, held at the Port Alfred Ski-boat Club on Tuesday, and was presented with a small token of the club’s appreciation by president Doug Sutherland Picture: ROB KNOWLES

HAVING arrived in Port Alfred as a young bride in 1961, Heather Howard still remembers seeing the town for the first time and knowing she was home, as she related in her talk to the Probus Club meeting at the Ski-boat Club on Tuesday, “Port Alfred in bygone days”.

Howard has been a cornerstone of the community of Port Alfred for the last 56 years, having been mayoress, a long-time member of the Kowie Players, a columnist for the old Kowie Announcer newspaper and taking over tourism for the town.
