As is always the case at the annual Kowie Striders Fun Run on Boxing Day, there was a great festive spirit among the participants in this year’s run which took place from the Port Alfred Country Club earlier this evening.
The event draws plenty of holidaymakers and locals alike, with many serious competitors in the 8km and 5km runs, as well as families and folks just enjoying a stroll and bringing their dogs along.
The weather was beautiful and the route very enjoyable, part of which goes along the scenic Kowie towpath. Several residents along the route put out lawn chairs to watch and cheer on the participants, and the cheerful Kowie Striders marshals were very encouraging to each and every participant.
There was a special treat for those nearing the end – a shooters table at the water station, providing a pleasant buzz for the finish.
Each participant received a fun run glass and there were plenty of fabulous lucky draws, in addition to prizes for men, women, and junior boys and girls in the top three spots in the 5km and 8km races. There were also prizes for those who came in fancy dress costume, like the daring young fellow who came in a bra and women’s underwear, and special recognition awards like that for Trevor Mackin, who completed the fun run with his guide dog Vici.
The fun run is sponsored by Remax Kowie and Compendium Insurance.
