Serendipity with Bev Young
IN the spirit of the season, and for all of you who have requested “ship pictures” and to highlight the incredible journey this little town has achieved, I include a photograph of six of the many ships that docked in the harbour in Wharf Street, almost 195 years ago.
It was the era of the “tall ships” – barques, schooners and the like, carrying goods from all over the world. Tea from China, cloth from England and so much more.
The coast of Africa was cruel too. Something in the region of 80 shipwrecks are recorded. Some ships in the actual river, and others scattered in the mouth of the Kowie River and along the coast.
