THE St Andrew’s U15A water polo team won silver at the annual Grey High school water polo tournament last weekend. The team had targeted this tournament and had worked extremely hard in and out of the water, to come back victors.
The team started exceedingly strong beating Glenwood House 9-1, Pearson 10-1, St Albans 10-0, Grey High U15B 10-0 and beat pre-tournament favourites Selborne 2-1 in a famous victory. In 5 matches the team managed to score 41 goals and conceded a mere 3.
The team were fighting fit and moved into the quarterfinals brimming with confidence. They met Somerset College from Stellenbosch and duly won the match 10-0. Moving into the semi-finals the College boys would come up against a tricky Wynberg U15A team. The team started slowly but eventually hit there straps to win the game 5-2 and earn their place in the Final where they would have a rematch with Selborne.
The final was a tense affair, with this being uncharted territory for the St Andrew’s boys. At the end of the first chukka, the score was 0-0 and both teams were looking nervous. However it was the St Andrew’s team who faulted and gave Selborne too much space and trailed 4-0 at half time. The team managed to pull it together come chukka 3 and narrowed the score to 4-2 with one chukka to go. The team exchanged attack after attack but Selborne ran out 5-2 winners and snatching the gold medal from the St Andrew’s team.
It was an incredible showing for the St Andrew’s U15A team and it shows with hard work and dedication come just reward.
