Jazz at the Castle

WITH LOVE FROM FRANCE: The first composition at the saxophone soiree held at the Classics at the Castle on Friday night, played by Adam Campbell accompanied on the piano by Peter Cartwright, was Tableaux de Provence (1955) composed by female composer Paule Maurice (1910-1967).  The fourth movement which describes a Roman burial site also painted by van Gogh and Gauguin, is unlike the others slow and haunting, combining a dreamy sax melody and ambient piano. Coincidentally, the final movement “La Cabridan” is about a large insect native to Provence, like a bumblebee or cicada, and the light-filled museum-music room attracted a bumblebee!
