Settlers Cemetery littered with rubbish

A GRAVE CONCERN: Reader and local resident, Charles Randall alerted Talk of the Town to the amount of refuse scattered all over the Settler Church cemetery off Bathurst Street. Port Alfred pensioner Charles Randall has taken it on himself to clear up the domestic refuse dumped at the Setter Church cemetery on the East Bank, but wishes that people would show some respect and get rid of their rubbish through the weekly municipal refuse collection or take it to the dump themselves.

Talk of the Town visited the site and saw mounds of rubbish scattered around, including cardboard boxes, plastic bottles as well as other domestic refuse.

This is not the first incident at the Settlers cemetery, which was the scene of vandalism a few years ago when gravestones were knocked over and smashed. Evidence of the destruction is still clearly visible at the site.

“I have been cleaning up the cemetery for some time now,” said Randall. “I don’t know who is responsible, but I have my suspicions. Still, I appeal to whoever is doing this to stop.”

TotT will follow-up on this story in a future edition where we will establish whether the situation has been resolved.
