Nine years imprisonment for two cell phone robbers

The Port Alfred Regional Court has sentenced Bongani Sibejele, 26 and Siphosihle Leyi, 24 to nine years imprisonment each after they were found guilty robbing a man of his cell phone nearly two years ago.

The incident happened on September 3 2017, when the victim, in his 30s, was returning to his home from the tavern, just after 3am. He was approached by two men who asked him for a cigarette, and when he told them that he did not have any, one drew a knife, demanding his cell phone.

The victim started to run and lost his balance and fell, at which stage the perpetrators used the opportunity to overpower him. They took his cell phone and an amount of cash that was in his possession and fled the scene.

Shortly after the report was made to the SAPS, information was followed up which led to the arrest of Sibejele and Leyi.

Port Alfred Cluster Commander Brigadier Morgan Govender commended the arresting officer Constable Thobani Gobizembe for his speedy response, and the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Jacques Scheepers for ensuring the successful conviction of the two criminals, who are said to have been terrorising the community.
