Broken gravestones and the tearing up of the ground at a cemetery in Nemato on Tuesday morning, these cows were simply allowed to wander indiscriminately through the township.
This is not a new issue, and “free-range” cattle is a huge problem in the area and, more widely, the Eastern Cape. Uncontrolled cattle can be seen on roads, including national roads, and are a menace to private property. Cattle have been the cause of several road accidents in the area.
It is understood that cattle need to graze but there are specific places, such as commonages, where these animals can be controlled and not allowed to wander freely.
