Following an inspection of the Port Alfred Bowling Club greens by the Eastern Province greens committee, the Eastern Province executive have given the go ahead for the Eastern Province Pairs final to be held at this club this coming Saturday and Sunday.
The first time any tournament of this nature was held at this club was the Eastern Province Mixed Pairs in 2018.
Representing Eastern Areas at that final six years ago were Andrew Sterley and Marlene Mitchener from the Albany Bowing Club who ended up winners.
Port Alfred Bowling Club greenkeeper Trevor Frost is delighted at the verdict.
“I am so pleased. It has taken months and months of really hard work to get the greens into such a good state they are now in. A lot of time was also needed to get rid of the many bare patches which had developed,” Frost said.
“In addition, some time ago, my assistant greenkeeper Jaco van Rensburg upgraded our two greens, also paving the banks and this has added to the attraction of the club.’’
Former club president John Hodges who stepped down at the club’s recent annual general meeting was thrilled too.
“This was a wonderful decision by Eastern Province and many thanks to Trevor for all his hard work.’’
Graham “Grumpy’’ Enslin, the new men’s club captain, was excited by the decision.
“It is a real honour to hold an Eastern Province event such as this. A lot of behind the scenes work now has to be done but we are only too happy to do it.’’
Enslin added that morning tea would be provided for all visitors while lunches will also be available.’’
The winners of the Eastern Areas men’s and ladies’ pairs who will be competing are this club’s members Peter McCullam and Peter Haswell and Lyn West and Ronel Hough of the Kenton Bowling Club.
