Stray cattle blamed for fatal crash on R67

A man died yesterday when the driver of a vehicle travelling from Port Alfred to Bathurst swerved, allegedly to avoid cattle in the road, and overturned. The accident occurred on the R67 near the 43 Air School turnoff around 5pm on Sunday July 12.

South African Police Service spokesperson Captain Marius McCarthy said when police arrived at the scene, they had found a Toyota Rumion on the side of the road and ambulance personnel treating five injured people, including the driver.

A sixth person, a passenger of the Toyota Rumion, was declared dead on the scene by Emergency Medical Services.

The driver and four other passengers were taken to Port Alfred hospital for further medical treatment.

McCarthy said, “It is alleged by the driver of the Toyota that a cow was crossing the road in front of the moving Toyota… he tried to avoid hitting the cow but lost control of the vehicle, it swerved and overturned.”

The investigation into a case of culpable homicide was ongoing, McCarthy said.
