One man and his dog

GUEST speaker at the U3A last week, retired warrant officer Steve Leslie discussed how canine search and rescue missions were performed with his dog, Buti, an 11-year-old German shepherd who along with Leslie, retired from the police last year.

“But this relationship between the two of us will not stop. Search and rescue is in our blood,” said Leslie.

Having finished school in 1973, Leslie joined the navy as part of his national service where he became a dog handler. In 1997(reporter to check date) he joined the South Africa Railways as a dog patrol officer and later, after the canine search and rescue unit was officially established in 1994, in 1996 he joined the police.
