TWELVE municipal officials from Mnquma municipality appeared before the Butterworth Magistrate’s court today for fraud, corruption and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) after they were arrested on the same day (March 27), by a multidisciplinary task team comprising the Hawks, Crime Intelligence and detectives.
The group; Luleka Nonyongo (39), Sakhumzi Madubela (38), Lusindiso Patric Boya (42), Amanda Ntamo (35), Grace Tasana (66), Ivy Sikhulu (46), formed the municipal bid evaluation committee, while Kulile Clock (43), Lubabalo Manjingolo (30), Viwe Phindile Madolo (44), Primrose Vuyokazi Gonya (43), Dinyiswa Olga Mrwetyana (34), Zonwabele Plata (63) formed the bid adjudication committee.
Their arrest comes in the wake of ongoing investigations regarding alleged fraud and corruption in Eastern Cape municipalities. They allegedly flouted tender procedures during the course of 2014 to 2016 when four tenders with a combined value of R37-million were allegedly unduly awarded to three companies.
The court released the suspects on warning and they are expected back at the same court on May 25.
