City of Cape Town officials have reported injuries after a large explosion rocked the Somchem Denel munitions manufacturing facility in Somerset West in the Western Cape.
Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Theo Lane said that they had responded to an explosion at the facility at 3.45pm.
“What can be confirmed is that an explosion has occurred. There are reports of injuries. A full release will be released as soon as more info is received‚” he said.
Residents in the area around the plant on the outskirts of Macassar and Firgrove 30 km east of Cape Town reported hearing and feeling a massive explosion in the area.
The WHOLE of False bay area just felt a MASSIVE explosion. All the doors in my house was rattling or slammed close!
