Two Alexandria Christian Academy pupils are ecstatic about their trip to University of Central Missouri in the USA from May 16 to June 4 next year.
Luntukazi Sizani, Grade 11, and Hlumelo Zokoza, Grade 9, participated in an All African Student Convention competition for Christian schools for a week in October, held in Bloemfontein. The competition had more than 800 pupils participating and Sizani and Zokoza were in the 200 selected to participate internationally.
Sizani did a science exhibit about renewable energies and how we need them, while. Zokoza wrote a poem about how he grew up in the township.
“I came second in my science project and Hlumelo was in the top 10 of pupils that wrote poems – he was in seventh place. At first we didn’t believe that we were selected because we only heard about being selected on our way back to Bloemfontein and we went crazy in that bus,” Sizani said.
The pupils have to raise their own funds to attend the convention and tour through sponsorship and other fundraising initiatives. The cost per pupil is R73,000. The pair are passionate and hopeful about this trip, and plan on selling cupcakes, hot dogs and boerewors every Friday when school reopens next year.
“We really want to go, we are even willing to do our own fundraising. In our last strip to Bloemfontein we managed to raise funds for our trip. We will also work hard for this one as well try and raise as much funds as we can,” Zokoza said.
They also ask the community to help them reach their goal. Anyone who wishes to lend a helping hand can contact Luntukazi on 060-997-5141 or Nosipho Sizani on 083-531-0014 and Hlumelo on 076-676-0202 for more information.
