The pervasive problem of illegal overtaking on the R72

Since the roadworks on the R72 began, overtaking has been prohibited along several long stretches of the road by solid white lines.

At one point traffic police, either local or provincial, set up a trap for vehicles overtaking illegally near the turnoff to Green Fountain Farm. A number of motorists were caught and fined. But similar traps have been lacking along other stretches of the road between Port Alfred and Fish River.

The following photographs of offenders were taken along that section, on January 3, January 27 and February 7, just to show how pervasive the problem is. All illegal overtakers were also exceeding the speed limit. All photographs were taken from the front passenger seat.
