DESPITE the heavy rains last Saturday, the Kenton veterans annual tennis tournament went ahead with a slight change in format and with all of the games played on Sunday.
The popular tournament, which draws some of the best veteran tennis talent all over the Eastern Cape, has been running for 25 years and remains one of the most popular events on the tennis calendar every year.
The teams are put together by invitation and although most of them are geographically linked, a number of players in the teams are not from that particular area. Delia’s D’Lites for example is a Port Elizabeth team, Jenny’s Jellybeans are from Grahamstown, Mine’s Minnows from Bedford, Border Buffaloes from East London, St Francis Follies from St Francis, Dave’s Darlings and Tony’s Terrors both from Kenton and Arthur’s Aces from Graaff-Reinet.
Men qualify to play at age 50 and the ladies at 45. Most of the top Eastern Province veterans’ players were present again this year.
Visitors enjoyed the weekend despite no play on Saturday and had the opportunity to sit down and enjoy the festivities with other players and the delicious meals prepared.
Even though there were no official winners this year, the Mine’s Minnows tennis team emerged as winners of the A-seeded section after a shorter and changed format was played on Sunday morning.
After the matches, the veterans sat down to enjoy a delicious potjie made by Mark Purdon.
