A 65-YEAR-OLD Bathurst woman’s birthday came to a tragic end when side died after being run over by an alleged drunk driver on the N2 near Peddie Road and Frasers Camp shop on Sunday at around 5.30pm.
According to reports, the deceased, Barbara Jean O’Reilly, needed the bathroom and her husband had stopped near the Frazers Camp shop so that she could use their bathroom.
As she crossed the road returning from the shop a vehicle drove into her. It is alleged that the vehicle was unlicensed and the driver, a 25-year-old male from Khayelitsha, Cape Town, was drunk.
A case of culpable homicide and driving without a valid driver’s licence has been opened against the driver of the vehicle. O’Reilly died at the scene. The suspect has been detained at the Grahamstown police cells.
