Youngest piper to join the band

GRADE 6 pupil at St Andrew’s Prep, Christopher Pretorius made Prep history last week when he became the youngest member ever to be selected to join the well-known St Andrew’s College Pipe Band.

Christopher began lessons on the Chanter at the beginning of Grade 5 and, with a lot of practise, progressed quickly.  At the end of the second term he had learned enough to progress to a full set of pipes.

However, blowing up the bag and keeping the air pressure steady is another daunting hurdle for pipers and Christopher had to work really hard to make a sound on them.  He persevered and eventually with much persistence and practice he was able to practise the set band tunes. At the beginning of his Grade 6 year he was asked to come and practise with the St Andrew’s College Pipe Band, which is an incredible honour.

He has had a fantastic teacher in Murray Roodt, who is an Old Andrean (Merriman 2010) who was Pipe Major when he was at St Andrew’s College.

Christopher is making great strides in his bagpipe playing, just recently opening the St Andrew’s Prep Golf Day at the Belmont Valley Golf Course and also performing at the Easter Service.
