THE latest sight of dredge effluent being pumped out in Port Alfred’s East Beach dune pocket has alarmed local beach users.

Surfer Justin Maddocks took a video and photo of the effluent being pumped out on Sunday.

“I’ve shown it to various people, not only those in the local surfing community, and the overwhelming response has been one of revulsion and disgust!” he said.

There were objections to the dredging of the Royal Alfred Marina canals and disposal of spoils in the dune pocket a few years ago, but the ongoing project has the approval of the Eastern Cape department of economic development and environmental affairs.
