The Port Alfred community have been phenomenal in helping the couple who had to evacuate their home last night when a fire broke out, destroying their home completely.
Isobel, Andrew and Lauren Meyer of Pam Golding Properties have been wonderful, in that they took the couple to the hospital and remained with them until they were released, and then opened their home to them for the evening. The couple are still with them.
Unfortunately the Meyer’s home is not ideal as the couple are elderly and cannot cope with steps. The lady is in her 70’s, while her husband is in his 80’s and wheelchair bound.
Although various businesses around town have offered to collect goods, what is most important is that the couple find a place to stay. It needs to be a home that is wheelchair friendly, flat, and reasonably priced. A furnished home would be ideal under the circumstances. It would also be preferred if there was one collection point.
The couple have requested that Talk of the Town act as a collection point for all donated goods, and we will intern be liaising with Isobel Meyer of Pam Golding regarding delivery. The couple are residing with the Meyer’s at present.
The immediate necessities are shoes and clothing. The lady is a size 14-16 and a size six shoe, while the male is a size 34 and 9 and a half shoe size.
Collection for other goods can wait until a place to live has been secured. Talk of the Town will inform the community of the progress as information becomes available.
Hospice have been fantastic and are helping where they can. Dirk de Vos towed their vehicle away to safety at no charge, while Doug from Kowie Key hot-wired the car and is re-cutting keys for them – also for free. Spar have also been tremendously generous, giving a voucher of R2500 for use at any store in the Roshill Mall.

Unfortunately the couple’s cat, a tortoise shell, has gone missing. Anyone with information can contact Talk of the Town or Isobel Meyer at Pam Golding, Port Alfred.
The couple are fine, but extremely shocked and upset. Holistic EMS was another business who were onsite to check them, which was also done at no charge.
Well done and thank you to PA community for rallying around this family who are taking huge strain. The fire brigade have also been great in returning to the home to check if there are still any burning embers or fire threats.
All donations please to be dropped off at Talk of the Town. We will inform the public once we know that they have a roof over their heads as to what their next needs will be.
Thank you to everyone who has helped in any way to ease their terrible burden.
