IN Blade Runner 2049, a sequel to the 1982 Blade Runner movie, we meet “K” (Ryan Gosling), who is commissioned to “retire” (kill) bioengineered humans called replicants when they have reached the end of their serviceable life.
On this dystopian Earth and its off-world colonies, replicants have been created to do the menial tasks rather than humans, but the only way to identify them is by a “Voight-Kampff” test, designed to distinguish replicants from humans based on their emotional response to questions.
The sets designed for this movie are in alignment with the 1982 film, and the story is a continuation of the original (loosely based on the Phillip K Dick short story, Do androids dream of electric sheep?).
Blade Runner 2049 is a mesmerising look at a bleak future where humanity and its creations have to battle with the question of what it means to be human. For anyone who has seen the original movie, this is definitely one to put on the to-do list.
