FOLLOWING several incidents and serious accidents involving stray cattle in Grahamstown, an integrated operation was held to collect stray animals on Thursday.

SAPS spokeswoman Captain Mali Govender said the Stock Theft Unit and Vispol (Visible Policing) worked in conjunction with the Makana municipal parks department, traffic department and  Makana Ratepayers Association members.

“The object of the operation was to collect all stray animals in the Grahamstown area and to enforce the Animal Identification Act and to impound unclaimed animals,” Govender said.

A total of 131 cattle and eight donkeys were collected in and around Grahamstown. A total of 11 J534’s for failing to brand animals, to the amount of R5 700, were issued to owners who claimed their animals to release them.

Five donkeys were handed over to Annerie Wolmarans, the head of the Makana Donkey Care facility, Govender said, and 128 cattle were claimed by owners while 13 were transported to the Alexandria pound.
