This morning eager runners, walkers and strollers attended the first official parkrun in Port Alfred which started at the Port Alfred library lawns and followed a route alongside the river and then a loop back on the same route. Despite very strong winds, approximately 260 eager park-runners showed up for the first event.
For race directors Martin Neethling and Pauline Weed, the journey to launch Port Alfred parkrun had been not without its challenges but has finally become to be an official event to take place every Saturday at 8am.
The first official parkrun was opened by special guests and long time comrades marathon athletes Bruce Fordyce and Bob Norris.
Parkrun is free and open to any interested persons, young and old, dogs are welcome as long as the owner keeps them leashed. Any interested runners must register online at www.parkrun.co.za/portalfred/ and must bring their printed barcode to the start the race. Runners can also register at the library.
