Senior state advocate encourages rape victims to speak up

Advocate Nickie Turner addressed Kingswood College on “rape culture” recently. In her interesting and thought provoking talk, she appealed to rape victims to “speak up”. Turner is the senior state advocate working in the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for the Eastern Cape. She has held this position for the past 20 years. She prosecutes in the High Court in Grahamstown – mainly rape cases of children below the age of 12. Turner outlined the definition of rape from a legal perspective as well as recalling cases in which she has been involved. By the quality of questions asked by pupils and their interaction with Turner the address was well received.
