The Port Alfred Garden Club held it monthly at the St Paul’s Church hall last week, with TV celebrity gardener Melanie Walker as guest speaker.
Many will remember Walker from the 1980s Skattejag TV programme (or the English version, Treasure Hunt). Now living in Parkhurst, Johannesburg, with her twin daughters, Walker has become a celebrity gardener on such TV and radio shows as Radio Today’s Grounded, Studio 53 (scriptwriter), doing voice-overs for Bike SA TV, teaching on Show Garden Design at Lifestyle College, and organising the 94.7 cycle challenge experience. Walker has also published books on gardening and the audience was a little surprised when she stated in her introduction she was no expert.
Walker can be considered an Eastern Cape girl, having been schooled in Queenstown (now Komani) before returning to her home in Johannesburg.
“I travelled quite extensively through the Eastern Cape but have never visited Port Alfred before,” she shared with the over 100-strong audience.
