Inquest after body found in Kowie River

The South African Police Service has confirmed that they have opened an Inquest following the recovery of a body from the Kowie River in Port Alfred on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Marius McCarthy said it was alleged that at around 6.15am on Wednesday, a kayaker reported to the NSRI that there was a body floating in the Kowie River near the Centenary Park area.

“Upon arrival the body was discovered on the bank of the Kowie River and recovered. It is suspected that the body that was retrieved could be that of the person that went missing in the Kowie River on Saturday December 6 2025 at about 2.10pm,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy said the investigation was ongoing.
