The greatest commandment

Inspirational Insights by Pastor Theo Snyman

AN expert in the law wanted to test the Lord Jesus by asking Him what the greatest commandment of the law would be.

The Lord’s answer was without any hesitation at all.

Jesus replied: “`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind’. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: `Love your neighbour as yourself’” (Matthew 22:37 – 39).

To know God is to love Him, and the more we know Him the more we love Him! There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe who He is. He is majestic, magnificent, wonderful, excellent, holy, righteous, loving, gracious, merciful awesome… and so much more.

Love is a tremendous motivator. Genuine love for God will motivate us to serve Him wholeheartedly. All that serving Him entails will be a pleasure rather than a burden. May you and I have the privilege of hearing one day: “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness” (Matthew 25:23).

Love for God will also motivate us to say no to the temptations of this world. Our goal in life would be to live in a way pleasing to Him, which requires us to steer clear from sin. Thankfully, His grace helps us to accomplish this goal.

Loving our neighbour is also of primary importance. This refers to many more than those living next door to us. Sincere love for each other would transform our society completely, for love is the fulfilling of the law.

Although a commandment requires obedience, keeping this one is not burdensome.
