ROAD CLOSED: New Rest protesters closes R67 by sitting down

The local housing saga continues.

Protests reported on in the last few weeks by New Rest community continues as residents refuse to sit idly and wait. Last week they gave Ndlambe municipality seven days to respond to their desperate pleas for housing.

Local government said seven days was too little time  to engage the Department of Human Settlements regarding the 17 year housing plight.

After Ndlambe fire department doused the fire, protesters sat down peacefully, singing songs while SAPS maintained control. Nearer to Grahamstown at the Manley Flats intersection another protest took place. Traffic officials and SAPS urged protesters to open road and managed to open earlier today, however the Thorn Hill intersection near Port Alfred remains closed.

No council members, or Ndlambe officials present to address protesters.
