IT came as a bit of a shock at Wednesday’s full council meeting when the subject of cattle-owners appeared on the agenda and half of the ANC councillors left the council chamber so as not to be accused of a conflict of interest.
Speaker Vivian Maphaphu asked why the councillors were leaving, only to be told they all owned cattle.
Ward 10 councillor Ray Schenk asked why the councillors had not declared their interest before the meeting and was concerned that the subject had been discussed before in council, and had never invoked such a reaction from councillors. He also asked that Maphaphu, as part of her duties as speaker, should take action against the councillors who did not declare their interests.
