The Sarah Baartman District Men’s team participated in the national championships, held in Durban from October 1 to 6, and overcame problems in sponsorship and ended the tournament in a respectable second place.
Initially, and due to the inadequate funding, the men decided to put their shoulder to the wheel and worked hard to get the necessary funding in place to make their dream of competing in the championship a reality.
Buco in Grahamstown donated a gas braai and the men collected about R14,000 with little effort. Sponsorships from Kynoch, Sarah Baartman District Sports Council and Kouga Municipality, also helped raise even more funds.
Correspondence was sent to DSRAC (Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture) as well as the district mayor requesting support for kit, but no response from either entity was received. However, this did not break the team’s spirit, and kit was loaned to them by the Sarah Baartman women’s team.
From the outset, it was clear that winning would be a punishing task. By the end of the respective section games, Sarah Baartman finished third on the points log. During the semi-finals, Sarah Baartman managed to focus on positive play and won against Uthukela (KZN) by more than 12 goals. In the final Sarah Baartman played Tswane A, losing 44 – 33.
Still, that was enough to see Sarah Baartman take the second place and the silver medal at the national championships.
