Two arrested and nine sheep carcasses recovered

During a vehicle checkpoint held as part of ‘Operation Festive Season’ on 2018-11-08 at 09:45, members of Seven Fountains, Highway Patrol and Prov Traffic, stopped a vehicle at the Assegaai river bridge on the N2.

During a search of the VW Polo 9 sheep carcasses valued at R9000 were found in the boot. 

After investigation, it was established that the sheep were stolen in Mthatha, and 9mm cartridges were found at the scene. These will be forwarded for forensic analysis.

Two suspects (both aged 20yrs) were arrested.

On Saturday Detectives from the specialised stock theft unit continued with their investigations and enrolled experts from K9 unit of Port Alfred and with the assistance of the sniffer dog and found a firearm (handgun) hidden in the gearbox consul compartment of the vehicle.

Charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition will be added to the charges of suspected stolen property (stock).

The suspects will appear in the Grahamstown magistrates court shortly.
