Calico Academy hosts Culture Week and ArtShip exhibition

Calico Academy is hosting a Culture Week featuring a children’s chess tournament, a cultural day and an art exhibition.

First up, on Friday September 15 from 2pm to 4pm is a children’s chess tournament. It’s open to children up to the age of 16 and costs R40 to enter. The final challenge will be played on the ArtShip original garden chess set, with players competing for a R250 prize.

On Saturday September 16, the school will host a cultural day from 10am to 2pm.

At the Calico Cultural Day members of the public are invited to view the ArtShip Exhibition, play garden games such as croquet and boules, or participate in art activities. Picnickers will be entertained by the dancers of the Sha-Loui Dance School. Boerewors rolls and other refreshments will be available. There are no card facilities so please bring cash. Funds raised from the event will be used to upgrade facilities at the school.

The ArtShip Exhibition will also be open to the public from Monday to Friday, 17 to 21 September from 2pm to 5pm. This promises to be an enthralling display of many artistic styles and media. The work on display includes learners’ work from preschoolers to adults as well as the staff of the ArtShip.

ArtShip head, Helen Averbuch, is displaying sculptural pieces including functional objects as well as paintings. Many of her works are sea-themed, reflecting her love for the ocean.

Jolene Olivier’s sensitively rendered botanical inspired drawings are also featured and many of the art pieces are available to purchase.

Janet Gentry, a talented adult learner, is including a few wonderfully quirky sculptures.

The exhibition is housed in the building behind the school at 10 Lambert Road.
