Choir brightens up Damant Lodge’s Christmas

Victoria Girls High school choir treated 60 Damant Retirement Home residents to moving renditions of various Christmas Carols on Saturday. The residents sat spellbound as the talented VGHS choir led by music teacher, conductor, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist, Sibu Mkhize, performed their repertoire.

Margaret Barnard, who coordinated and led the proceedings, suggested in her welcome speech that the choir “bring the roof down”, which they certainly did. Barnard read from the makeshift podium ‘A Shepherds story’ of the Nativity, stopping at certain points along the way so the choir could sing the carols.

Among them were Little town of Bethlehem, Away in a Manger, Joy to the World and Silent Night.

At the end of proceedings, Mkhize, in a solo act performed a haunting version of Panis Angelicus (Bread of Angels) and Frank Sinatra’s My Way to rapturous applause. The residents and the choir enjoyed tea and cake afterwards.
