TRAGEDY struck twice for the Tandani family recently as one brother allegedly killed another after their mother’s death.
TotT first learned of the incident upon making enquiries about a road that was being graded for the funeral of the mother of former mayor Sipho Tandani. It became a double funeral when Tandani’s older brother Reuben was killed.
Two of Tandani’s brothers got into a fight which led to the alleged murder.
Provincial police spokesman Captain Khaya Tonjeni confirmed the incident
“Bathust Police can confirm that a 50-year-old suspect was arrested and charged for murder after a case of murder was reported to the police on May 9 at 8.30am,” Tonjeni said.
“It is alleged that the suspect and the deceased [Reuben] were drinking together at their residence at Trappes Valley railway cottages on Monday May 8 during the night when the deceased and the suspect argued. The deceased went to fetch a hammer, but did not do anything. He just kept it next to him.”
Reuben, 63, was found barely alive by family members the following morning at about 7.45am. He was lying outside the house and had severe injuries to his head.
The ambulance and police were notified and attended the scene. Reuben died on the way to the Port Alfred Hospital.
Zilindile Tandani first appeared in the Port Alfred Magistrate’s Court on May 10, then again on May 17 for a bail application and most recently on Wednesday. The case has been postponed.
