COMPLAINING that Talk of the Town has no right to cover the story of their protest, residents of New Rest and surrounding communities pushed around this reporter this morning, shouting “hamba!” and “we don’t want Talk of the Town here”.

They were apparently bitter over the facts revealed in last week’s edition regarding the violence perpetrated by the protesters in last week’s protests, especially the firing of live rounds and the senseless destruction of property.

They were also angry that TotT reported that ringleader, Sibusiso Zweni, who works at the Ndlambe Fire Department, was the subject of an inquiry in the theft of computer parts for which his employment was suspended.  He was subsequently re-hired after a disciplinary hearing. Ndlambe municipal spokesman Cecil Mbolekwa confirmed Zweni’s link to the theft incident and said there were “issues” with the process of the disciplinary hearing, where correct procedures were not followed.

“We are still handling this as a municipality,” he said. Zweni has subsequently been reinstated with the Ndlambe Fire Department.”

On Tuesday morning the protesters were vocal and even began physically abusing this reporter, preventing him from reporting further on the protest.
