King William’s Town – 13 October 2017:
Yesterday, on the 12 of October, the Grahamstown High Court handed down a sentence to four men who gang raped a twenty five (25) year old woman on the 24th of December 2016. Siphamandla Dyasi aged eighteen (18) received eighteen (18) years imprisonment; Anele Yawa twenty-six (26) years old received life imprisonment; Masixole Pieter Matwa twenty-four (24) years old received life imprisonment and Aphelele Yawa eighteen (18) years old received thirteen (13) years imprisonment.
The gang rape took place after the victim had gone drinking with the accused when she was walking from a neighbouring farm on her way back home. The sentences will run concurrently. Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt. Genl. Liziwe Ntshinga commended the investigating officer detective Sergeant Poyo and said: “This will indeed send a strong message to our communities that it does pay to put trust in the criminal justice system and those contemplating these horrendous deeds to refrain from them unless they want to spend a lifetime behind bars. Well done to the investigating officers and the prosecuting teams, ” she concluded.
