By 1pm this afternoon, December 29, 2018, a fire had burnt a large swathe of veld and bush on the west bank of the Fish River. Smoke drastically reduced visibility on the R72 and Talk of the Town witnessed small game crossing the road to flee the blaze. DA MP Ross Purdon was one of the first people on the scene, on behalf of his colleague Rory Gailey, the owner of Fort D’Acre, as there were fears the fire could jump across the R72 in the high winds. Purdon also attempted to warn passing motorists to slow down because of the danger of driving in reduced visibility. Ndlambe fire department arrived to combat the blaze and the traffic department also came to close the road for as long as required.
