Participants in the Port Alfred High School Polar Plunge gathered in the parking lot at Kelly’s Beach in anticipation of taking a dip in the sea on the winter solstice. Some were hastily in and out of the cold water and others dwelled a bit and soaked up the experience. There were a few daring swimming costumes, like Borat-style outfits and thongs. Some corporate teams came dressed in theme for the occasion, with the team from Kenny’s Sports Bar sporting the unique uniform of toilet plungers taped to their heads. The fundraiser for the school (R50 per person) included a tasty breakfast roll and coffee or hot chocolate after the swim.
