No‚ tobacco products‚ including cigarettes‚ will not be returning to shelves this week‚ says the Fair Trade Independent Tobacco Association (Fita).

Fita debunked a WhatsApp message doing the rounds on social media claiming that the tobacco ban would be lifted and that cigarettes would be sold again from Wednesday.

Fita said it was aware of a number of communications claiming that the Pretoria high court had made a ruling on the matter.

“This is not correct and is misleading‚” said Fita.

The association’s case over the ban on cigarettes under levels 4 and 3 of the lockdown was heard on Wednesday and a judgment will be made in the afternoon.

“We will make the necessary announcement once we are in receipt of the judgment from the Pretoria high court‚” said Fita.

When ciggies could be back
According to President Cyril Ramaphosa‚ it is only a matter of time before smokers can get their fix the legal way.

Last month he said: “We are not permanently going to be on level 3. We are going to migrate to another level. Even those who are hankering for tobacco‚ they must know that it is only a matter of time before their hankering is assuaged or addressed.”

Minister in the presidency Jackson Mthembu also said that the ban on tobacco would likely be lifted at level 2 of the lockdown.

“The ban on cigarettes‚ it’s just at this level we are in. We don’t know how many weeks we will be at this level. I can assure you after we’ve been out of level 3‚ I don’t see the ban on the sale of cigarettes continuing‚” said Mthembu.

  1. Our goverment, ramaposa and dlamini belong at a circus, no respect for those who lied to us, we are adults, we can make our own choses in regards to smoking, they failed as parent, now they want to be ours, they can go to hell!!!!!!!

  2. Do not believe a word he says – he has to wait for NDZ to give the go ahead. Useless beyond words

  3. I just wonder when we will be going to level 2 but they will implement another strategy to ban the cigarettes

  4. Are WE still in LOCKDOWN or is it finish? Disaster Management Act2002 27.5.a to c. Lockdown last for 3 Months. May be extended, saw no gazettes?

  5. I’m over these rancid aweful black market ciggies, couldn’t breath last night, they’re killing me, if they cause damage, I’m going to sue the state, you’ve caused this. Before lockdown I was gearing myself up to stop smoking, ive been smoking for 35 years, then lockdown came, i finished my ciggies i had then too much anxiety that kicked in, i got hold of a twisp with oil, it was alright untill that ran out, then I was going off my head, too much stress and anxiety, less income on top of that did not help, had to get a ciggie and fast, fricken shock horror, I could but at a hell of a cost, like I could afford to pay double the amount 😠 so now this ban has left me ill from these hell vile ciggies and very pissed off because I couldn’t stop either!!! So essentially, thanks for killing me government! There is however one consolation prize to all this, karma, get some.

  6. I have always been a rebel and now I will stay one at first I thought this will be a good time for me to maybe quit but no one will force me to quit my mom and dad could never do that now a corrupt government who kills the economy try to do that stuff them that is good language for me that has been raced nice the right wording would be ‘f@%k them! There are much bigger things like job losses businesses closing down not only in the tobacco industry but hairdressers, hotels, lodges, restaurant s, people over 60 can’t work. Wake up people this is a flu and when u are not in good health u get brongitis the government is getting money from the WHO for every Covid 19 death. Even if you die off Aids it will be called Covid 19. President and government please align yourself and get your facts straight??!!!

    • Its only smokers and the opposition who complain but mr President did a very good thing by putting a ban on tobacco it kills not only the smoker but also none smokers

  7. No smoker I know stopped smoking. They just pay more for the cigarettes and someone is smiling all the way to the bank……

  8. This whole Coronavirus Pandemic is a smokescreen for something far more insidious & very important. The select few are pulling all the strings behind the scenes, pls be aware don’t allow yrself to be sucked in losing sight of all around us.

  9. They are always saying “another level then this and that” . How can these levels continue when they have been declared unconstitutional? That is a court that has been created by the government and ignored by the government.
Why should we follow the government that has killed our livelyhood and rules like the communist regimes of other countries?
We as people should take no nonsense and the whole country should down tools and stand up for what is our rights.

  10. All I can say don’t do to others that you don’t want to do to your selfs. What goes around comes around
One day you will have to explain.but it doesn’t help to say something because the government does not listen or understand. Dlamini Zuma I feel very sorry for you . And this story of rasist must stop because I’m white and have a lot of black people as my friends. And alot of the black people are complaining about the government and special y about Dlamini Zuma. She is killing the people of South Africa. We have a lot of respect for our president .I think he has got a lot of pressure special under Dlamini Zuma.

  11. THE WAY I SEE THE SIGARETTE SAGA .NDZ HAS HER OWN AGENDA AND THE NCC AMENS EVERYTHING SHE SAYS BECAUSE OF HER POSITION AS MINISTER OF COGTA .IT SEEMS THEY ARE PERMITTED TO IGNORE THE SO CALLED CONSTITUTION AND BILL OF RIGHTS TO SUIT THEM,WHAT I CANT UNDERSTAND IS THAT THE COURTS ARE ALSO PROLONGING THE OUTCOME?
WHY? WHY ?WHAT IS GOING ON ????

  12. I wish the Government will just wake up, we have more serious problems waiting to happen with almost no water. Just thinking of bacterial viruses and another epidemic makes me want to smoke to relief a bit of the anxiety of just about all the shit that is happening. I am so tired of other people deciding I have no rights and what is good for me or not. I am not a criminal, I am a law obiding citizan, I dont drink I dont zol, I just want a cigaret that I am able to afford.
