“Step two, three, four… turn two three four…”
Toes were tapping and fingers snapping as Damant Lodge residents were treated to a medley of solid gold favourites by the Port Alfred Line Dancers on Thursday July 18. The crew of 10 turned the Lodge’s lounge into a dancefloor as they stepped, turned, twisted and jived, led by Gail Elliot.
The highlight was when the dancers invited the residents to join them, and several stepped up to join the circle for a happy ending to an afternoon’s entertainment and fun.
“Oh I enjoyed that,” said resident Carol de Beer. “I’m not really a dancer, but that takes my back years.”
Heather Grimbeek, who will turn 90 on Saturday, also started with a disclaimer.
“I used to do a bit of a jig, but I’m not a dancer,” Grimbeek said. “I enjoyed this afternoon a lot.”
Elliot has been teaching dance in Port Alfred since 2001 – ballroom and Latin in addition to line dancing.
“It’s so good for body, mind and soul to dance,” she said. “When you’re dancing, it’s hard to think of anything else. And of course the exercise is so good for you.”
The Port Alfred Linedancers meet once a week on Wednesday evenings. Contact Gail Ellliot at 071 061 8116 if you’d like to join them.
