The Rosehill Mall in Port Alfred was abuzz with excitement on August 31st as 35 teams took part in the second annual Calico’s Amazing Race. Organized by Calico Academy, this year’s race was a resounding success, drawing participants and spectators alike to a day filled with fun, challenges, and camaraderie.
The race, modeled after the popular TV show “The Amazing Race,” saw teams of two navigate through a series of checkpoints, each presenting a unique challenge. Armed with cryptic clues, participants raced against the clock, unraveling puzzles and overcoming obstacles that led them through and around the mall. The event not only tested the competitors’ problem-solving skills and teamwork but also highlighted the beauty and vibrancy of the local community.
Among the standout teams were Cindy de Lange and Desmond Gambiza, who clinched the first-place title, winning R1,000 in cash and two R200 vouchers from La Dame Mystique. Close behind were Courtney Aylwin and Alex Todd, who secured second place and took home R500 in cash along with two R100 vouchers from Bargain Books. The best-dressed award went to Mario van Loggerenberg and Dirk Swart, whose creative outfits earned them gifts from Lavender Tree Trading and Elsa Barnard.
Vice Principal Marlene Slade of Calico Academy expressed her delight at the success of the event, noting the growing popularity of the Amazing Race in Port Alfred. “This year’s race was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of our community,” she said. “We are thrilled to see how the event has grown, with more teams and greater participation from local businesses. The relationships we are building through this event are truly special, and we’re excited to continue this tradition.”
“A special mention goes to the 43 Air School, whose teams not only dominated the competition but also brought a lively and creative energy to the event. Their participation and enthusiasm were key highlights, adding to the vibrant spirit that characterised the day.” Slade stated.
“The event not only showcased the competitive spirit of Port Alfred’s residents but also strengthened the bonds between Calico Academy, the shops at Rosehill Mall, and various businesses in town.” said Slade. “The partnerships formed during this event are set to last a lifetime, reflecting the essence of community that Port Alfred is known for.”
As the event continues to grow in size and popularity, plans are already under way for next year’s race. With aspirations to make it even bigger and better, Calico’s Amazing Race is well on its way to becoming one of the most anticipated events on Port Alfred’s calendar.
The spirit of “Local is lekker” was truly alive at Calico’s Amazing Race 2024, and the town of Port Alfred is already looking forward to what next year will bring.
