Port Alfred was abuzz with excitement last weekend as the Civic Centre played host to a spectacular display of creativity and style.
The First Annual Ecawa Festival Fashion Show, presented by the Ecawa Festival Foundation in partnership with the National Lotteries Commission, captivated dozens of spectators with its theme, “My African Dream.”
The event featured the innovative work of at least eight designers, each bringing their unique vision to the catwalk. Designers whose work was showcased included Christopher Tom, Khusta’s Designs, Baxo Designs, Queen M Style, and Sivu Sotha.
Thando Philiso, the guest designer, expressed the thrill of showcasing their designs in Port Alfred for the first time.
“The demand is high in the fashion industry,” Philiso said. “People love the work, not only because we make beautiful clothes but because we are about developing people’s self-esteem, building confidence, and making a change.” Philiso emphasised that fashion is about making statements, not just wearing anything that fits.
The audience was treated to a special live performance by Nathi Mankayi, with the event hosted by Reggie Solani of uMhlobo Wenene FM and Hlumela Qabo from Tru FM.
Local artists also contributed to the vibrant atmosphere, showcasing their talents through dance and celebrating local fashion and entertainment.
Zikhona Maki, the founder of Bhelekazi Clothing, shared that her collection was inspired by “Royalty and Elegance,” featuring black and white African prints with a touch of red to symbolize royalty.
Maki described the meticulous process behind her creations, from inspiration to design, pattern making, fabric cutting, stitching, and finally, fittings and accessories.
Her collection aimed to speak to those who appreciate elegance while remaining true to their African roots. “I always ensure every design is bespoke, comfortable, and made from good quality fabric, incorporating creativity on new trends,” Maki said.
She hopes her designs will enhance well-being and foster a community that values creativity and self-expression.
Another standout designer, Neliswa Peter, founder of NellolinaYND, drew inspiration from traditional African wear.
She aims to create unique garments that make clients feel regal. “I would love for my designs to reach out to so many people, young and old, and to be able to get them sold in any store in South Africa,” Peter expressed.
Event organiser Siyabulela “Ivy” Madyo highlighted the importance of showcasing local talent. “People must produce more designs so that our local people start boosting the local economy and help others grow,” Madyo stated.
The show left a lasting impression on attendees. Kholelwa Dumezweni, a resident, was thrilled by the unique designs, particularly those by QueenM Style, which she felt showcased dignity.
Another resident, Phindiwe Malusi, praised the event as beautiful and suggested that the organisers aim for even greater exposure in the future.
