A courier vehicle en route from Gqeberha to Makhanda was hijacked on Tuesday night. Affected customers have been urged to submit claims to the courier company.
South African Police Service provincial spokesperson Colonel SIphokazi Mawisa said the vehicle was hijacked around 10pm on the N2 offramp near Coega.
“A Toyota Corolla pulled up in front of the truck and three armed suspects forced the driver and his passenger out of the truck and into the Toyota Corolla,” Mawisa said. “They were later dropped off in Kwadwesi where they alerted SAPS.”
The truck was later found abandoned in Motherwell; however, the parcels it had been carrying were missing.
A letter to individual customers from Courier Guy dated January 21 said, “We regret to inform you that an incident occurred on 20 January 2026 involving one of our linehaul vehicles operating on the Port Elizabeth-Grahamstown route. As a result of this incident, shipments manifested on this specific route may have been affected. We understand the inconvenience and concern this may cause and are engaging directly with impacted customers to resolve the matter as efficiently as possible.”
Providing the case number, the courier company said, “Unfortunately, the hijacking incident resulted in the loss of our freight, as it was offloaded by the perpetrators at the scene. Our recovery team has confirmed that the freight is not recoverable. Affected customers are being notified individually based on confirmed parcel losses.
All shipments manifested on this route have been affected by the hijacking. Any shipments confirmed as stolen will be communicated directly to the responsible account holder.
Mawisa confirmed that a case of truck hijacking was opened by SAPS Swartkops and was being investigated by the Serious Violent Crime Investigation Unit.
