Thirty players from disadvantaged backgrounds took part in the Individual Medal competition, with winners in three levels of expertise.

Nemato Golf Club chairman Mzwandile Ngweba said the tournament was sponsored by Ndlambe Municipality through the Ndlambe Sports Forum.

“We cater for all groups – old and young, men and women,” he said. “We didn’t have any juniors or any women taking part today, but we have some in the club. If they had been able to make it they would have played.”

Member Colin Mavuso, who won the A section of the tournament, has been training juniors at the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club and at the driving range at Rosehill Mall.

He also plans to visit schools in Nemato and teach them the basics of golf on their sports fields.
