‘We will remember them’

Members of the Port Alfred Moths salute for the Last Post at the Remembrance Parade this afternoon to honour those who fought and died at the Battle of Delville Wood during World War 1. Given the task of capturing the wood in July 1916, the 1st South African Infantry Brigade held it for six days, enduring constant shelling by the German artillery and repeated attacks by enemy troops. Of the 3 153 South African soldiers who entered the wood, only 755 survived.
